Nestled in the quintessential French countryside, Villa Chateau I offers an intimate and regal experience for its guests. Our Chateau takes “private countryside escape” to a whole other level. This magnificent 11th century feudal fortress was besieged by the French during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and later restored to its former glory. The castle is steeped in history and has a mysterious past. It exhibits many medieval architectural features, such as a drawbridge, loopholes, crenulated and machicolated towers, secret escape tunnels under the castle, and stonewalls up to 12 feet thick.
Location
Villa Chateau I is located 344 km (215 miles) southwest of Paris in the Centre Region of France. It can easily be accessed by car (3 hour drive from Paris), TGV train to Châtellerault station, or regional flight to Poitiers or Tours.
Description of Private Castle Estate
Villa Chateau I is a unique destination for the discerning traveler. You can rent the entire estate for your private affair and immerse yourself in the castle’s 1000 years of history and beautiful natural surroundings. Villa Chateau I offers six luxury bedroom suites in the main castle – 4 king and 2 queen size suites. Each bedroom is custom decorated and exquisitely furnished. The bedroom suites are adorned with monumental stone fireplaces, stained glass and lead-ribbed windows and oak-beamed ceilings. All suites are custom-furnished with a combination of French-sourced antiques and imported case goods, hand-made upholstery and luxurious bedding. We import high-end pillow-top mattresses, goose down duvets and pillows and 280+ thread-count sheets. All bedroom suites have a full private en suite bathroom. The bathrooms have been upgraded with premium fixtures and fittings, and there is an ample supply of hot water and water pressure. In addition, all guest bathrooms are equipped with American-style standalone showers. Such improvements are made while preserving the original character and charm of the castle architecture.The castle also has an amazing grand salon, with a magnificent vaulted ceiling and exposed wooden beams, which comfortably seats 20 people atop of the six-story donjon. There is a 1000-year-old wine cave, a round dining room, a charming breakfast room and private kitchen facilities. Combining the historic features of the castle with our luxurious furnishings provides for a unique guest experience. There are an additional two apartments available each with 2 queen-sized bedrooms in the adjacent outbuildings. Altogether the estate offers 10 bedrooms and can sleep 20 guests on site. The entire estate is offered as a private rental.
There is an on-site General Manager who is fluent in English and French and available 24 hours a day. They are familiar with the Chateau, its surrounding area and local attractions and would be happy to assist you with your travel plans. The estate offers daily maid service, laundry facilities, satellite television, broadband Internet, telephone service and ample parking. We can also arrange for catered meals on request for an additional charge.

Villa Chateau I lies within the beautiful La Brenne Regional Natural Park known as the land of a thousand lakes. Numerous rivers, lakes, forests and farmland surround the castle. This protected natural area is home to a large number of wild plants, birds and animals and is a fascinating place to begin your discovery of the countryside and the areas rich natural heritage. The Chateau sits majestically on the banks of the Creuse River, which is perfect for water activities, such as kayaking or canoeing, or for some rest and relaxation in the heart of nature. The regions diverse landscape is also ideal for biking, walking, or hiking.
Venture outside the Chateau to discover the region’s many historic secrets and treasures. In the medieval town of Angles-sur-l’Anglin, just 3 km (1.5 miles) from the castle, you can walk through the ruins of the 11th-15th century fortress atop the cliffs overlooking the town and wander down the narrow cobblestone streets to the peaceful l’Anglin River. This town is considered one of France’s most beautiful villages, exuding with charm and enticing history. More medieval wonders can be found in the nearby Chauvigny, with its five fortresses on the town’s hill, or at the 12th century Benedictine abbey of Fontgombleaut, where the monks are famous for their daily Gregorian chants. The Abbey of Saint Savin is also close by Villa Chateau I. This remarkable 11th century abbey features beautiful frescoes depicting the old-testament and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Pamper yourself at the spa resort town of La Roche Posay, which offers healing powers, beauty remedies and relaxation at the mineral water and thermal spas. There is also a casino for those who would like to try their luck. Also, within an hour’s drive of the Chateau, are the larger cities of Poitiers and Tours, both offering an abundance of history, shopping, markets, unique character and local gastronomic delicacies.
