Playa del Carmen is 30 minutes south of Cancun Airport and is a charming Caribbean town with many amenities. The beaches of Playa del Carmen are wide and white, in contrast to Cancun's which have been stolen by recent hurricanes and storms. The ocean is much calmer there than Cancun as it is protected by an offshore reef and the island of Cozumel. The town itself is a little bit European and a lot authentic Mexican. Due to the influence of the many Europeans that live there, there is fantastic family-owned restaurants with prices that can't be beat. Discos in town have salsa, reggae, American rock and techno themes, and the world famous Blue Parrot Dragon was voted one of the 10 best bars in the world by Newsweek magazine a few years back. Live music is throughout town after 10:00 p.m. and in beach bars in the afternoons.
There is a world class golf course five minutes away (built by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.) The ferry to Cozumel is also a 5-minute walk. There are tennis courts available in the resort development where the villas are located. It is very picturesque with Maya ruins, well-tended yards, panoramic views of the Caribbean and is a gated community. The attractions nearby are XCaret (a snorkeling ecopark) which is about 3 miles south, XelHa (another snorkeling ecopark) which is about 15 minutes away. In addition, there is diving, snorkel tours, sailing (with and without captain), jungle tours on 4-wheelers, parasailing, horseback rides on the beach and through the jungle, an aviary filled with tropical birds, and cenote tours. A cenote is a subterranean river of fresh water and it's quite gorgeous with cool caves and lusciously cool water to jump in. The Maya ruins of Tulum are closer to Playa del Carmen than to Cancun and they are breathtaking. They are on the coast of the Caribbean and the contrast of the grey of the ruins against the turquoise of the sea is spectacular.
