Pass through the front doors into the art gallery-style foyer with its rich honed marble floors throughout and the beautiful views beyond.
Anchored by an ebony grand piano along with a collection of framed turn-of-the-century Tibetan Thankas brought with the Dali Lama during the Chinese invasion, this room?venue of celebrity parties during the Phillips era?features a heath-to-ceiling hooded gas fireplace centered by dueling custom 1940?s tuxedo sofas in neutral tones accompanied by matched silk ottomans over a contemporary 'T-shirt' rug. A sleek dining table taken from designs by Knoll is met with chairs from the 1950?s and is balanced by seating and case furniture by the famed 1930?s designer, Russel Wright. Accents include a 19th Century Venetian mirror, stainless steel tables and several rare examples of Bourke White pottery.
What Palm Springs estate would be complete without a private media room? Laid out to provide comfortable seating for 14 adults, this room features a 53' Sony Projection TV for theatre-quality viewing. It is housed within a custom made solid steel cabinet with surround sound, reworked from John Phillip's home recording studio. Centered is a group of four upholstered deck chairs. Three of which were painstakingly reproduced from one taken from the SS Normandy. Try to spot the original one when you're there. The discrete mechanics of the space make this a gracious adjunct to the living room, providing a separate conversation area or a more intimate cocktail party environment. A vintage Japanese Kimono sash is framed in an eight-foot box on an etched glass wall below clever lighting seen from the living room. Three mobile custom made stainless steel and glass tables add to the room?s function.
The living room can link with the covered patios beyond to accommodate sit-down dinners for 150. Additional poolside dining can host another 50 guests. The versatility of the contemporary Brown Jordan patio furniture in the Meridian style lends itself to both formal dining and poolside barbecues. A grouping of six slip covered caned-back chairs accompany a matched, custom-made settee.
The handsome Knoll-style table in the living room doubles as a formal dining table expandable to seat ten and is placed adjacent the fireplace for cool winter nights of fireside dining.
Meticulously designed to delight both the occasional cook and the professional chef, the kitchen's materials and lay-out are as pleasing to the eye as the sense of space and efficiency are to the mind. Whether an informal wander-in breakfast or a dinner where everyone participates, the kitchen is the center of entertainment. We've provided island seating and comfortable chairs for 8. Watch your designated chef prepare a meal while taking in the views of the pool/spa and mountains and valley beyond.
All three dining areas are accessible from the kitchen and yet it is discreetly removed from the principal guest suites and living areas. The kitchen's wall of glass allows panoramic mountain and valley views while providing excellent work space. The curved hood over the professional range and the expansive travertine countertop, housing appliances and service items below, mimics the home?s sleek design without obstructing the vistas. More than 100 square feet of counter space is perfect for caterers.
48" SubZero Stainless Refrigerator

3 Bosch dishwashers
2 convection/electric stoves

A floor to ceiling double door pantry, all stainless steel fixtures and appliances, and rich natural wood cabinetry mix with the honed travertine flooring and slab counters to present an all natural desert design that is both sophisticated and comfortable. The cozy armchair and ottoman along with 8 island chairs (they disappear under the counter when not in use) allow for easy conversation and relaxed TV viewing. The 1940's AEG two-sided suspended industrial stainless steel clock is an unexpected touch.
As found in wealthy ancient Roman homes, the atrium forms an outdoor oasis in the center of the home. A curving stone wall backs the waterfall, cascading into an up-lit glass-tiled pool. Fragrant jasmine, gardenia and flowering trees and shrubs are perfect for morning coffee or tranquil afternoon tea. The 1950?s bamboo love seat and slipper chairs are designed by Paul Frankel.
The master suite is located in the southwest corner of the home and provides the ultimate in privacy and well-conceived design. Sharing no common walls with any other room in the house the suite is utterly peaceful and insulated from your other guests. Its matching sets of large sliding doors open to private access of the pool, spa and Painted Mountain vistas on the east. A private patio and lounge is to the west with views of the San Jacinto Mountains. From your raised California king bed you wake and retire to these breathtaking landscapes.
Tones of tobacco and taupe in this room will instantly relax and soothe you. Curl up on the attractive seating and reading area facing the fireplace in this large suite. All around you is a collection of prints depicting scenes of Native American life dating to the turn of the century by the famed photographer Edward S. Curtis. Flanked by antique Chinese red lacquered cabinets topped by painted porcelain lamps from the 1960?s, the bed is draped in custom sheered velvet hangings revealing 300 thread count Egyptian linens from Frette. The acoustic serenity of this suite is doubly secured by the painted grass cloth wallpaper, which helps to muffle even the slightest whisper.
The large walk-in closet also has mountain-views for natural sunlight in the dressing area. The suite is complete with its own TV/DVD and stereo system.
To cater to the exacting standards of our guests we've designed a luxurious state-of-the-art master bathing and dressing area. Pass through the entry hallway with your own hidden washer/dryer and linen closet to the right and the entry to your large, light-filled walk-in closet is to the left. Beyond lie stunning views of the San Jacinto Mountains and the elevated soaking tub with views of the mountains and to the left a separate w/c room. There are two mirror image travertine vanities with wall-mounted brushed chrome faucets. Step down to the spa/shower area with 10 Hansgrohe head and body sprays and mountain views from the shower.
There is a seamless glass door directly from the shower to your private patio and garden for sunbathing. This garden is filled with fragrant blossoms of white gardenias, jasmine, tree roses, and lavender. The gentle bubbling of your own waterfall will lull you to sleep.
This luxurious second master suite was the room in which Papa John Phillips recorded his last two albums. A large bedroom with 8? sliding doors opens to the light-filled atrium on the east side and a secluded patio with San Jacinto Mountain views on the west. Decorated in a spectrum of aged tobacco tones, the room features a chair and ottoman designed by the 1940s French designer Jean Michael Frank, examples of 1950?s Dutch case furniture and decorative accessories. The raised California king bed is draped with custom hangings over crisp Frette linens, all flanked by a pair of mirrored Venetian night stands from the 1940?s. The warm texture of the fabrics is echoed by the painted grass cloth paper that covers the walls. A large walk-in closet and your own TV/DVD/CD entertainment center is included.
The Second Master Bath features two separate vanities, a dramatic glass-enclosed shower with waterfall shower head, direct access from the shower to this suite's second private patio, a separate w/c room, and large linen closet. The ivory honed travertine floors and counters, wall-mounted brushed chrome faucets and sleek hidden towel racks complete this "Architectural Digest"-quality bath.
Anticipating that the clientele of Time & Place must often conduct business while on vacation, we have created a light-filled poolside office/study, complete with full luxurious bath with mountain views, Hansgrohe body sprays and honed travertine floors and counters.
The study, in shades of taupe and cream, is directly accessible from the Master suite through its own private hallway two steps down to the well-equipped private study: computer modem, dedicated computer, phone, fax line, file storage, copier, TV, stereo, and DVD player.
This area doubles as a fifth bedroom suite with a queen hide-a-bed and could serve alternatively, as a children's/ grandchildren's suite.
Every estate-quality house should have its own separate guest house with private entry, separate living room, and private bedroom and bath. At the Phillips Estate one enters the guest house through its own abundant garden (filled with a variety of fragrant white and lavender plantings) bordering a large private patio, also accessible directly from your master suite. The guest house bath also boasts crystalline garden and mountain views.
Continue on to the guest house living room entry (with hide-a-bed for extra guests) and up a step to the bedroom and bath area. This cozy space, decorated with abundant luxurious fabrics, is flooded with light from the East and South and offers direct access to the pool and spa from its own separate patio.
