Nantucket I; 7 bedrooms in Nantucket, Massachusets

Description

$5300 per day in high season 2006 (June, July & August) Plus 10% Admin Fee

Twenty-five miles out to sea, off the coast of Cape Cod, Mass, lies an island. "Take out your map and look at it," wrote Herman Melville of Nantucket in "Moby Dick." "See what a real corner of the world it occupies." Real, but not entirely real. Nantucket since the 1700s, has been a world to itself, at once exquisite and untamed, a distant harbor for whaling ships, a haven from storms. Today its history and its breathtaking natural beauty, its New England homes and cobblestone streets have made of Nantucket a destination like no other, a respite, at once luxurious and wonderfully tactile, sand between your toes and heather beside the road, and the most beautiful, historic, luxurious homes one can find. Time & Place Nantucket's luxury vacation rentals are among the most beautiful of these, your home on this island.

Summering on Nantucket means sand on pristine Atlantic beaches, cooling blue ocean breezes after the sun of the day. Summer is flowers and gardens overflowing white picket fences, walks along cliffs overlooking the sea and bicycling along country roads that end in tiny beach towns where you'll find lemonade to drink and fresh salt water to jump in or a sailboat to take out on the water. We're not formal during the Nantucket summer days. We like picnics of sandwiches, cold beer, or even a smoothie from the Juice Guys on Easy Street. We like biking back from ‘Sconset to Madeket, a tiny bit sunburned, shopping for wool and cashmere in town, getting ice cream cones from the Juice Bar on Broad Street, windsurfing, reading under a shade oak. In the evening, we might dress up and sample some of the best cuisine in the world at American Seasons, and afterwards stroll around the dock and watch the sails furl down like falling angels and enjoy the Atlantic's stars. (And when we get home, our luxury rental has smooth stone showers and silken old pine floors and downy beds to welcome us.)

On fall days, we love the blood-red cranberry bogs and ocean mists, the green of the island turning to fiery red and orange leaves under blue skies. It's all below from the bell tower of on Centre Street. There's the whaling museum, with its skeletons of the great beasts, oars and harpoons, and its stories of the sea that spawned the sailor's superstitions. During Christmas Walk, the whole island is decorated, wood smoke in the wind from the fireplaces at the inns. The Labradors and Golden Retrievers love winter here, the snow and the peacefulness and the log fires when you get home. And then suddenly, it's spring again, the gardens stirring. You've never seen clear skies since you've seen the deep unexpected blues promising summer on Nantucket Island.

On 1 1/2 of the loveliest acres in the historic district of this pristine New England island, up a hundred-yard private manicured drive, lies an extraordinary Nantucket residence.

Completely renovated in time for the spring 2002 season, this estate caters to the most discriminating client, who seeks the finest appointments and service. It offers extraordinary privacy with direct access to the Nantucket I Conservation Area, which means the back yard is 5.7 acres of New England walking trails and Nantucket tranquility. Amazingly, the estate is a 3-minute walk from the center of town, eliminating parking issues.

Decorated exclusively with Brunschwig & Fils textiles, the furnishings are done in subtle earthen tones infused with punches of apple green and pink. English and American antiques sit among select piece of McGuire furniture. Superb art hangs on walls featuring Benjamin Moore paint and Brunschwig & Fils wall paper. This home is amenable to large-scale formal entertaining as it is to intimate informal dinners with friends. This estate includes:

  • The Main House with two extensive master suites—one at either end of the house— each with handsome fireplace and with large state-of-the-art baths featuring Waterworks fixtures and tile exclusively: Showers with massage jets, honed travertine marble floors, large soaking tubs, separate toilets, rich paneled cupboards, walk-in closets, and dressing rooms.
  • Complete Subzero and Wolf kitchen.
  • All Brunschwig & Fils fabrics and wall coverings.
  • Custom embroidered Italian Frette linens throughout all bedrooms.
  • Every bathrooms appointed with Waterworks tile and fixtures exclusively.
  • Benjamin Moore custom paint.
  • Three additional main house bedrooms, each with a private bath, and a separate family room.
  • The Carriage House with two more bedrooms and bath.
  • A large, light-filled great room with cathedral ceiling, fireplace, and kitchen—perfect for large, participatory family dinners or for servicing large-scale entertaining.
  • An antique-filled living room and adjoining library with fireplace.
  • Formal dining room with French doors leading out to a beautiful, lush courtyard.
  • Formal croquet pitch and numerous outdoor garden rooms.
  • Parking for 20 cars.
  • A private outdoors hot tub and dipping pool.
  • Custom made wood and honeycomb blinds by Great Windows throughout the home.
  • Solid teak pool and patio furniture from McGuire's Portico Collection.

Reception Area

Pass through the front door and your eye seeks the window at the end of the hall, telescoping the lovely garden and Nantucket I beyond. You are then flanked by the adjoining living room and library. The living room with fireplace and wet bar is a welcoming room for large cocktail parties or intimate gatherings, rich in the hues of the heart-of-pine flooring, a custom-loomed elliptical rug below comfortable furnishings and a baby grand piano. Grand formal entertaining is done among an extraordinary collection of 17th century American naturalist hand-colored prints

Dining Room

Bright Brunschwig & Fils fabrics center this room painted in Granny Smith Apple green by Benjamin Moore. The custom dining table, made according to the specifications of our designer, Joseph Paul Davis, is accompanied by a pair of matched demilune tables that can be brought to the main table to augment seating for up to 12. This room's collection of botanical watercolors is a natural link to the landscaped terrace, pool, and surrounding gardens accessed through the room's French doors. A light-filled breakfast room, this space is a delight to the eye, day or night

Kitchen

Since Nantucket life is often centered around informal entertaining and everyone participates in cooking, we have created a kitchen and adjoining family room that can both meet the exacting needs of a caterer, serving 80 for a formal sit down dinner— perhaps pool-side—or perfectly for family and friends enjoying a fun, casual evening of cooking and socializing. The kitchen is orientated to take advantage of pool and garden views and is appointed with stainless steel Subzero and Wolf commercial appliances.

The kitchen has been thoughtfully equipped with:

  • SubZero stainless refrigerator
  • Wolf 60" double oven range
  • 3 Asco dishwashers
  • 2 sinks for food prep and dishwashing
  • Separate Subzero full-size wine cooler and ice maker

Abundant counter space hosts informal bar stool dining or serving/prep for entertaining. The handsome rich wood cabinetry is complemented by the natural stone countertops, and all-stainless appliances provide a sleek but naturally warm space.

Family Room

The family room with fireplace, hidden entertainment center— including a 42" Zenith Plasma Screen TV, DVD, and Bose surround sound system— can double as a media room comfortably seating 12 or a relaxed gathering spot during mealtime or any time of day.

Reading Nook

Accessed on either side of the fireplace is a marvelous small and very private study with a cozy see-through fireplace. Conduct your business in complete privacy and yet be only steps from the hub of activity. This room also enjoys great views of the gardens and Nantucket I beyond

Library

Two rooms (with the living room), which are ideal for hosting a formal cocktail party or reception, but equally perfect for quiet reading or workspace.

Master Suite West

The master suite is accessed through a private hallway adjacent to the family room through which you enter a tranquil cathedral-ceiling suite, surrounded by private gardens.

The elevated king bed is richly draped in fine custom embroidered Italian Frette linens and sits among furnishings appointed with Brunschwig & Fils fabrics. From bed you look toward the handsome fireplace and sitting area. Double French doors on the east side of the suite lead to a private garden deck and secluded outdoor hot tub. There is a moon garden on the west side.

The suite naturally has its own TV/DVD and Bose stereo system and large, handsome walk-in closet. The beautiful writing desk conceals your private phone, fax, and computer modem.

This suite's master bath in bone-colored Waterworks stone tile, has garden views on three sides and a wood-burning fireplace. The two-person tub, centered on the fireplace, has a window looking toward the southwest flower garden and Nantucket I, delightful for day or nighttime relaxation. The fireplace’s glow will reach you even in the spacious shower with our signature Waterworks body sprays and private window with moon garden views.

The spacious stone-slab double vanity, with wall-mounted, satin nickel Waterworks faucets, is bathed in morning light from the French door leading directly from the bath to the terrace surrounded by a lush, fragrant garden.

Master Suite East

The old carriage house to this property has been converted to a sumptuous master suite, isolated from the activity of the main house but conveniently accessed through the first floor art gallery/breezeway. French doors open from the master bedroom to the pool and garden courtyard. All bedrooms have 300-count custom embroidered Italian Frette Italian bed linens. Decorated with abundant, lush Brunschwig & Fils fabrics and handsome art— and its own CD system and separately controlled speakers in each room -— this suite is a quiet sanctuary.

This suite includes its own private study (with fireplace and business facilities -- DSL, fax, and phone) which serves either as private office or reading sanctuary. Naturally it has its own TV/DVD and Bose stereo system. Reclining on the comfortable sofa in front of the wood-burning fireplace, the study's French doors open directly out to a private patio, the croquet pitch, and gardens, a tranquil living space within your suite.

Dressing Area

The master bath is a wonder in stone, wood, and water. Infused with natural light, this bath with dressing area has been beautifully finished in Waterworks stone tile floors and slab counters, wall mounted satin nickel Waterworks faucets and subtle lighting. There are two large separate sink/dressing areas, a private w/c room, and a spectacular indoor/outdoor double shower with elaborate Waterworks body sprays and shower heads, which opens to its own very private garden, surrounded by a wonderfully fragrant variety of plantings.

Second Bedroom

Young girls will adore this private room furnished with a pair of twin beds draped in floral prints from Brunschwigh & Fils and covered in custom embroidered Italian Frette linens. Completed with a French mapel chest and country furniture, this room provides a peaceful destination after a full day.

Studio Guest Suite

Set atop the carriage house garage with 360 degree views of the property, this is by far the most secluded suite at the property. Yellow and green printed fabric from Brunschwig & Fils complement the walls and neutral carpet. Seating includes a pair of cozy club chairs, an expansive window seat and a writing desk. Naturally the king size bed is covered in custom embroidered Italian Frette linens

Entry Porch

Drive down the long, white-shelled drive, bordered by expanses of grass, and enter the estate's stone courtyard, whose privacy from the street is guarded by landscaping. The main residence is to the North, the carriage house to the East, and the croquet pitch, putting green, and gardens to the West. The front porch and its New England rocking chairs lead you to the front door. (If you're carrying groceries, there’s an adjacent door which leads discreetly to the kitchen.)

Three block walk to the beach.
