South Carolina Island Plantation is a 400 acre private island in the heart of the scenic South Carolina Low Country. The island offers a unique refuge from the outside world; a peaceful sanctuary abundant with shore birds, heron, wood storks, osprey and bald eagles. Deer, armadillos and peacocks wander freely in this private nature preserve. It is ideal for a family or for two couples who love the outdoors and are interested in ecology and the environment. For the sportsman, the waters around the island offer excellent fishing of all varieties, both off shore and inshore. Yet this wilderness paradise is minutes away from all the amenities of modern life, golf, tennis, fine dining and shopping, and the historic plantations and towns of the Old South.
South Carolina Island Plantation is adjacent to world renowned Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, yet it is in a world all its own. Nestled in the creeks of the scenic Low Country the 400 acre private island is just 35 minutes from the Savannah, Georgia, International Airport and 20 minutes from the Hilton Head Island airport which can accommodate private jets. You will be met by the island manager and driven to the plantation’s mainland dock where you will board the island’s private cabin cruiser for the ten minute ride to the plantation. As you ride through the creeks and marshes you will be surrounded by playful dolphin, a myriad of bird life and the mysterious beauty of the legendary Low Country.
The spacious three bed room home is nestled under majestic live oaks with a spectacular view across a peaceful pond to the unspoiled salt marshes beyond. The master bedroom pavilion features a king bed and separate dressing areas. You awake to herons and osprey fishing in the pond outside your window. The other bed room pavilion features a charming Thai themed bed room and separate library which can also be used as an additional bedroom. The main pavilion, or great room, has a gracious living room centered on a massive brick fireplace, a dinning area that seats six comfortably, and a gourmet kitchen with breakfast bar. The main pavilion is surrounded by expansive screen porches for outdoor living and dinning during the spring, summer and fall months and with a. built in gas barbecue grill. The cathedral ceiling main pavilion has thermal glass pocket doors that disappear into the walls to embrace the screen porch and give a sense of living in the outdoors. The house is fully air conditioned and heated and has satellite television.
The plantation is fully catered, but can also be partially catered if more privacy is desired. The refrigerators can be stocked in anticipation of your arrival if lists are provided and excellent markets for fresh local produce and seafood are close to the mainland dock.
A traditional oyster roast will be one evening’s activity, fresh quail and venison will be grilled on another night. Yet a third evening of local specialties will include a Low Country seafood boil. Picnic lunches will be provided for the excursions. Alcohol is not included, but can be provided if desired.
Fine dinning off the island can be experienced at a wide range of gourmet restaurants ranging from the famous The Lady and Sons in Savannah to the five star Inn at Palmetto Bluff. More casual dinning is also available within minutes of the mainland dock.
The island is best experienced from early April to early November. Spring in the Low Country is gorgeous when the azaleas and wisteria bloom. The early summer months are perfect for experiencing all the water activities that are available. The temperatures in the spring and fall are in the mid seventies to mid eighties, while the months of August and September can be quite hot with afternoon showers. If you like cool weather the plantation is available during the winter months for one week stays which also include the availability of guided quail, duck and deer hunting. The weather is in the low 50’s to low 60’s with an occasional drop to the mid-forties at night. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s stays are also available for a premium.
The island is a sportsman’s paradise. In spring the cobia fishing is world class. The nearby Gulf Stream yields excellent big game fishing for sailfish, marlin, tuna, wahoo, and Mahi Mahi all summer long. Closer to shore you will find wonderful snapper and grouper fishing. The local pastimes of crabbing, shrimping and oystering are readily available at your front door. Spot tail bass and black drum inhabit the large salt water pond that lies in the center of the island as well as the vast salt water marsh estuaries that surround the island. This allows for an excellent opportunity to site cast with your fly rod or use live bait with your spinning tackle. In fall the giant redfish (40-60lbs) can be caught just offshore. Deer hunting, dove, quail and duck hunting can all be excellent in the fall. A university degreed wildlife biologist will accompany you on all your sporting expeditions.
Hiking the island’s beautiful trails, guided wildlife and bird watching, private guided kayak excursions, horseback riding, waterskiing, parasailing and day trips to swim and walk on scenic barrier island beaches are an enjoyable way to experience the environment. Tours of gracious ante-bellum plantations and scenic Savannah, Beaufort and Charleston to experience the historic beauty of the Old South are also available.
The world renowned golf courses and tennis courts of Hilton Head Island are a short drive away as are gourmet restaurants and excellent shopping. The five star resort at Palmetto Bluff with its epicurean cuisine and luxurious spa are a ten minute boat ride from the plantation. For those who feel less energetic, the wide screened porches on the plantation house beckon, as does the hammock that swings by the pond.
